Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on his first game back at Manchester United for 12 years as the Red Devils saw off the battling Magpies at Old Trafford.
After going close with a couple of efforts, Ronaldo opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time when he tapped home after Freddie Woodman had spilled a Mason Greenwood effort.
Bruno Fernandes then smashed home a third from distance, with substitute Jesse Lingard adding a fourth as United went top of the Premier League.
The margin of victory was harsh on Steve Bruce’s men, who played well for long periods. But that didn’t matter to the home fans, who had the added bonus of their side returning to the top of the Premier League.
